Understanding Metal Stamping

Metal stamping is a technology that uses molds and stamping machines to process metal plates into different shapes. This is a cold forming process and is currently a common technology for manufacturing parts. Many people may not have heard of this technology before, but in fact the metal stamping parts made by metal stamping technology can be seen everywhere in our lives. Basic concepts of metal stamping


Metal stamping is a low-cost and rapid part manufacturing process that can produce a large number of identical metal stamping parts. Metal stamping technology can consist of many processes, such as punching, blanking, embossing, casting, bending, and flanging.


Punching is a technique that uses a die to cut materials into specific shapes. During the metal parts stamping process, when the punch enters the die, a piece of waste is removed, leaving a hole in the workpiece. On the other hand, blanking is the removal of the workpiece from the main material so that the removed stamping die component becomes the custom stamping parts.


Embossing is a process of pressing the blank on a mold with a designed shape or pattern, or passing the blank through a roller mold to leave a convex or concave pattern on the metal plate.


Imprinting is a technique of bending a metal plate, placing the metal plate between a die and a punch. This process allows the tip of the punch to penetrate the metal and produce accurate and repeatable bends. The deep penetration also reduces the internal stress of the metal workpiece, so that it does not produce a rebound effect.


The bending process is to bend metal into a desired shape. The bending process of metal will cause plastic deformation, the stress is higher than the yield point but lower than the tensile strength. Bending usually occurs around a single axis.


The flanging process is to obtain a bell mouth or flange for the metal workpiece by using a mold, a press or a special flanging machine.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Stamping


Compared with traditional manufacturing processes, the benefits of a&i metal stamping include lower mold costs, lower secondary costs and a high degree of automation. The production and maintenance costs of custom sheet metal stamping dies are often lower than those used in other common processes. Moreover, secondary costs such as cleaning and electroplating are also cheaper than similar treatments in other metal manufacturing processes. In addition, the stamping machine is relatively easy to automate, and can use high-end computer control programs, thereby providing higher accuracy, faster production and faster turnaround time.


The main disadvantages of stamping technology are the high cost of presses and the design and acquisition of molds. Obtaining a mold or designing and manufacturing a mold requires a higher cost. As the number of uses increases, the cost of each template will be reduced. However, it should be noted that the production of customized sheet metal stamping parts is a long pre-production process. If the design needs to be changed during the production process, and the mold is difficult to change, this means that all the previously invested costs are wasted.

Stamping is used in all walks of life, especially 3D design or other surface engraving applications. In addition, metal stamped components also exist in almost every industry, such as home appliance manufacturing, automobiles, lighting industry, telecommunications services, military and defense, aerospace industry, medical equipment manufacturing industry and electronics industry. In a word, auto stamping parts exist in almost every aspect of our lives.
